Barnes and Noble’s “PubIt!” is relaunched to entice self publishers

As far as easy, straight-to-e-reader publishing goes, Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing is still the reigning champion, in no small part because the Kindle still remains the leading e-reader on the market. Barnes and Noble has had its own self-publishing software for years, but you wouldn’t know by the numbers; while PubIt! attracted 20 percent more independent authors every quarter, Kindle is already overflowing with them, to the point where 27 of Kindle’s top selling 100 books are self-published. And while 25% of books on the Nook platform are self published, between CreateSpace and KDP, that number is most likely much higher on Amazon’s vast marketplace

Exciting news! According to Galleycat, yesterday Amazon reached an agreement to buy the popular social networking site GoodReads, which we mentioned in our recent article about social media.

Here’s what the press release says:

“Amazon and Goodreads share a passion for reinventing reading,” said Russ Grandinetti, Amazon Vice President, Kindle Content. “Goodreads has helped change how we discover and discuss books and, with Kindle, Amazon has helped expand reading around the world. In addition, both Amazon and Goodreads have helped thousands of authors reach a wider audience and make a better living at their craft. Kindle Direct Publishing launches beta of cover creation tool

One of the hardest parts of self-publishing is generating a good cover, either for paper books or digital ones. Places like Createspace and Lulu, among others, already have “cover wizards.”

You can certainly get a workable cover out of these “wizards,” but in my opinion it’s worth the effort to learn how to generate the artwork yourself, or at least hire it done. For one thing, there may be rights issues involved in reusing a cover created by a particular format’s “wizard” for another format. For another, you’re never going to get as much originality from a “wizard” as you can from real artwork.

Maybe some of you have been waiting for this one. And after a long, busy week (where I may or may not have forgotten to post yet), I’m finally going to tackle the subject.

Now, before I begin, I want to start off by saying I am not an expert and anyone who claims to be an expert (unless they have legitimate credentials and experience) is really not. There is blog after blog filled with writers rambling on about self-publishing and traditional publishing. They claim to be experts. Most aren’t. How To Publish On Amazon Using KD

When I was planning out how much time I would need to publish my Christmas book, The Christmas Number One, I assumed I would need 2 days to publish on Amazon through KDP (Kindle Direct Publishing). That was thankfully over-estimated by a long way. It’s easy, quick, and if you have everything ready that I’m going to tell you about now, then you can do it in 30 minutes maximum.

It was so easy, in fact, that I was worried that I had done something wrong. In order to use KDP you must register first. This doesn’t take too long and it’s the usual stuff. (Make sure that you have your bank statement to hand in order to complete the international codes for your bank account) After you have registered, there are only 9 Sections to complete, and I’ll go through all of them here with you.
